Trend Watch: Monochrome Beige

I LOVE wearing the color beige. However, now that I’m blonde, I sometimes find it harder to pull off and usually like to wear a darker lip and more intense makeup to break up the look (also a spray tan helps a lot!) When I had dark hair, (which has actually been most of my life) I bought this beautiful plain fitted beige piece of clothing from Marciano. I never knew what to call it because it was so versatile, it could be a fitted pencil skirt, a mini skirt, a strapless dress or a mid-calf skirt. It was like $20 and I bought it in 2008! My friends at the time of purchase were like, “What’s wrong with you? Get black”. “Are you kidding me? You’re getting a skin-tight nude dress? You’re gonna look naked'. “Heather, do not buy this!”. Regardless, I bought it anyway because I was just drawn to it and at the end of the day, I LOVED the colour.

It’s currently the first day of 2019. I have moved twice, gotten married, changed careers, hair colors (a lot) and between then and now, I am not lying when I tell you, this piece is still in my closet. Aside from family vintage treasures, I can say it is probably the oldest piece I have in my closet to date.

The beauty about this year ahead is that beige is a major vibe. We’re seeing it right back on runways and in fashion like it’s the colour black or something. My magic beige skirt hasn’t necessarily been worn every year, I’ve had times where I thought it was time to let go of it, but it’s so easy and small to store that thankfully I’ve never gotten rid of it. This year, with beige being so trendy, I can see it getting a lot of wear.

The way I like to nail an all beige look is to get a couple of pieces that are all different shades. I sometimes like to break it up with some white or clear pieces to keep it congruent. It’s also a really nice neutral to wear during the gloomiest months of the year (Jan and Feb) when most of us tend to reach for black. I also happen to love white boots right now which is a mono beige’s outfits' perfect fit. If you’re wanting to try this trend but don’t want to be in beige head to toe, an easy way to start is to pick one nice basic piece t - like a top. For the rest of the outfit, stick to earth tones. White, jean, dark brown. The ONLY colour that I personally wouldn’t pair with beige is black. Maybe small pops but nothing too dominant like a shoe. Leopard (which is actually quite trendy right now) is a great print to accent an all beige look. Next time you are invited to a weekend lunch, give it a try! Here is my take.
