Staying motivated along your fitness journey can sometimes be a strenuous undertaking that a lot of us can all relate to. There are good weeks and bad weeks, but in my opinion, as long as you decide to keep going you're already miles ahead of those who already gave up. It’s easy to get discouraged or unmotivated along the way, so today I’m sharing some of my favourite tricks for kicking your fitness journey into high gear!
Trying to completely overhaul your life is going to me much less sustainable than if you implement small changes one step at a time. You’re also more likely to succeed when you hit smaller goals rather than one big objective that can seem overwhelming. Instead of telling yourself that you’re going to start eating like Gwyneth Paltrow and hit the gym every day (starting tomorrow!) pick one thing that you know you’ll be able to accomplish. Packing your lunches, making time for the gym once a week, or riding your bike to work are all great places to start.
Try Something New
For me, changing up my fitness routine is the key to not getting bored with it. I like to mix up a combination of yoga, pilates, running, bodyweight exercises, and HIIT. When I notice that dreaded feeling of not wanting to start my workout, I know it’s time to move onto something new. There are some great apps like Classpass that let you try out different studios and find a workout you like, which are perfect for keeping you motivated.
Find a Buddy
Friends are great for so many reasons and on top of all the amazing fun things you and your besties get up to on a regular basis, they can also become a great resource for keeping you on track with your fitness goals. Planning for weekly checkins or workouts with a friend means you’re much more likely to actually do those things. You’ll also be helping your friend achieve their own fitness goals, so everybody wins!'
I love spending time outdoors, especially when the weather is good. Even just walking around is a great mood booster that makes me feel energized and ready to take on the day. There are also a ton of great activities and sports that get your heart rate going without even feeling like a workout. Why not try hiking or swimming, skiing or skating when you feel unmotivated? You’ll get your workout started and not even realize it!
Don’t Sweat It
If all else fails, give yourself a break from your fitness journey for a little while. When staying on top of it begins to affect your mental health and stress levels, taking some time away is the best thing you can do. Put the scale away and focus on doing things that make you happy rather than hitting the gym. Eventually you’ll find your spark and your motivation again. Use this time off to enjoy all the amazing things your body can do for you, and learn to appreciate what makes you, you.
